Using the US for sake of a convenient example, it’s been required since 1958 to render the animal unconscious before killing them. Usually through electroshock or a bolt to the head. For halal meat they just claim that slitting the animal’s throat renders them unconscious, which I guess is true if you insist.

Of course whether or not they’re followed in every factory is a different matter entirely, but surely you can’t argue with my point that while religious texts across all religions were generally guidelines for living at the time, things have changed very much since then and there is resistance to adapting.
